974 Shipping Containers Used in Construction of World Cup Stadium

Stadium 974 in Qatar, one of the eight venues of FIFA World Cup, is not only named after Qatar’s international dialing code. It also gets its name from the 974 recycled ocean shipping containers used in its construction, paying homage to the site’s maritime and industrial history.

This is the world’s first fully demountable covered football stadium in World Cup history. After the tournament, there are reportedly plans for the containers to be transported and reused in Maldonado, Uruguay, if the country is successful in its bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Nearly 2,800 production and converted freighters will be delivered over the next 20 years for growth and replacement of older aircraft. 38% of freighter deliveries will go to Asia Pacific airlines, 32% to North America, 16% to Europe, 9% to Middle East and Africa and 5% to Latin America.

“While the air cargo market is returning to a more normal pace after historic demand in the last two years, structural factors including express network growth, evolving supply chain strategies and new cargo-market entrants are driving sustained freighter demand,” said Darren Hulst, Boeing vice president of Commercial Marketing. “In the global transportation network, air freighters will continue to be a critical enabler to move high-value goods, in increased volume across expanding markets.”

SCFI Continues to Fall, Nearing Pre-pandemic Levels

The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) published on November 18, recorded a -9.5% overall drop of the index. Alphaliner indicated the -20.7% decline in rates on the Shanghai-North Europe route was “largely responsible” for the decline.

The SCFI also recorded rate declines on the routes from Shanghai to Melbourne of -20.3%; to Dubai of -15.6%; and Santos of -12.5%. The index has already fallen by -74% since its historical high of 5,110 points on 7 Jan 2022. “If spot ocean freight rates remain under the same pressure as in the past few weeks, the index will be back at pre-pandemic levels in December,” Alphaliner said in its newsletter.

Rates from Shanghai to North European base ports reached an all-time high on 14 January but were down -85% last week. Despite a shortened sailing distance, Shanghai – West Mediterranean spot rates remain higher than rate to North European base ports. Trans-Pacific spot rates fell -81% between Shanghai and California, while the China-U.S. East Coast trade recorded a -67% rate decrease.

“Actual freight rates paid by shippers in early 2022 were even higher, as the SCFI did not take into account the extra premiums paid for booking guarantees,” Alphaliner noted.

U.S. Rail Union Rejects Labor Deal, Raising Strike Concerns

There was a divided outcome as members of the two largest freight rail unions representing half of all freight workers, split their votes on agreeing to a contract. The Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers Transportation division, (SMART-TD) rejected the deal while members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) voted to approve it. In total, four of the 12 unions have rejected their agreements and remain without a contract.

The mandated cooling-off period will end on December 8, allowing any of the four unions to initiate strike action. The other unions have agreed to honor picket lines, which means all 12 union must approve the contracts to prevent a strike.

The National Carriers’ Conference Committee (NCCC), which represents the freight railroads in negotiations, said the “continued, near-term threat” of a strike “will require that freight railroads and passenger carriers soon begin to take responsible steps to safely secure the network in advance of any deadline.”

According to a report from the Association of American Railroads, a nationwide rail shutdown in the U.S. could cost more than US$2 billion a day.
